Public Access Computers

In partnership with the Community Access Program (CAP) the CBRL is pleased to offer computer terminals at many of it's braches for the public to make use of, free of charge.

Please remember that use of computers and the internet at a library branch is subject to the terms put forth by the computer/internet user access policy. This service is provided as a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked by the staff should they deem their actions necessary.

Becoming Eligible to Use the Computers

In order to make use of the computers at a library branch, you must first have a CBRL library card, and be approved for internet access.

Library cards may be obtained at any CBRL branch, however for youth under 15 years of age, a parent will be required to be present when applying for a card.

To become approved for internet access, you must read, agree to, and sign the acceptable user policy which the library currently has in place. This can be done at any branch with library access, after which an internet approved sticker will be placed on your library card, as well as a note placed on your record in our computers showing you are granted permission to use the computers. For youth, a parent must be present to co-sign for internet access approval.

Express Terminals

Express terminals are available at several CBRL branches for a once a day, 20 minute session. These computers are specifically configured for only web browsing and checking email, and as such, have no means by which to read floppy discs, CD-ROMs or USB drives/devices. Additionally, in many circumstances the express terminals are not configured to view many type of email attachments such as documents. Games are not permitted to be played on these terminals.

Please keep in mind that not all branches offer express terminals.

Visitors to the Library

Visitors to the area, or individuals who do not have a library card with the library, are able to make use of the computers/internet depending on certain conditions.

Visitors to the area that own land and pay taxes are eligible for a temporary visitor library card. This card requires a $5 deposit which will be refunded at the time of your departure from the area. With this card you will be able to sign up for computer access following the same guidelines as those above, as well as check out library items on the card.

For visitors who may be on vacation and do not pay taxes on land in the area, computer access is limited to one 30 minute session on the normal terminals per day, and one 20 minute express terminal session if such a terminal is available at the library branch. Visitors will be asked to sign a visitor information form and present at least one piece of identification before being able to use the computers.

Print Services

At many of the library branches which offer computer access to members or visitors, print service is also available for printing documents.

Printing is offered on standard 8 1/2 by 11 sized paper, in black and white only, at a cost of 20 cents per sheet. When printing, please ask staff to retrieve the pages for you if the printer is located in an employee only area of the library.

Staff Assistance

While the library staff are willing to try and help you with questions you may have while using the systems at the library, please keep in mind that the number of staff are limited both in number and technical expertise in relation to certain computer functions. Extensive assistance or support may be unavailable if certain problems arise while making use of the computer terminals. It is the responsibility of the user to be familiar with the system and software they wish to make use of.
