Summer Reading Program
About the Summer Reading Program
Each year, the Cape Breton Regional Library hosts a fun filled program that is designed to encourage children to read throughout the summer; allowing them to maintain or to increase their current reading skills.
This year the library is once again participating in the TD National Summer Reading Club. This program is a joint effort by Library and Archives Canada and the TD Bank Financial Group, to encourage children to read and visit their local library. The summer reading program is open to all children who have completed at least their primary year of school. Registration begins on June 14th and continues throughout the summer at all library branches, including the two bookmobiles. When children register, they receive a poster, stickers and a log book to record the library books they read throughout the summer. Children bring their log book to the library and the librarian will check off the books that have been read.
After reading two books children will receive additional stickers. After reading eight books, children will receive the remaining stickers, and a ballot for the prize draw and an invitation to the closing ceremonies held in September. At the closing party, all children who have read eight books will receive a summer reading certificate and a prize.
The summer reading program is non-competitive; all children who read at least eight books have an equal chance to win a prize.
Craft, Games & Fun Day programs are held at each library branch during the summer. These programs are free of charge but do require pre-registration.
The prizes awarded for the summer reading program are intended as an incentive to complete the program and are not awarded according to how many books a child reads. Prizes are donated through the generosity of many local, national and international businesses, the name of which are displayed on the gift that is presented to the child. This past summer, 606 children completed the program reading a total of 8016 books. Due to the large number of participants, the library welcomes and appreciates any assistance with the prize draw. Any donations received will be used as prizes for the Summer Reading Program, and not for any operational costs associated with the program.
