Talking Books on Cassette
Talking books are available to all people who have a disability that prevents or makes it difficult for them to read books in conventional print. Ask for a "Talking Book Application Form" at your local library branch.
For those patrons who are unable to pick up the talking books at their library branch, a special mail service is available. Also, you can print the form online and mail it in to the Cape Breton Regional Library, 50 Falmouth Street, Sydney, NS B1P 6X9.
What Are Talking Books?
A variety of novels, short stories and non-fiction titles read aloud on cassette tape. The average book records on 5 cassettes and provides approximately 7 hours of listening.
How Are Talking Books Used?
These cassette tapes can be used with any commercially available cassette player.
Who May Use Talking Books?
Talking Books are available to persons who are unable to read conventional print because of a visual, physical or neurological disability or a reading disability resulting from organic dysfunction. The disability may be either short-term or long-term in duration. The copyright holders permit the recording of Talking Books on the condition that they be used only by disabled persons.
Where Do I Get Talking Books?
Talking Books are available through any public library or bookmobile in Nova Scotia.
How Do I Apply?
All users must complete the application form or pick up a Talking Book pamphlet at the nearest library or bookmobile. Users living in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality or Victoria County should drop the completed form at the nearest library branch or mail the form to Cape Breton Regional Library, 50 Falmouth Street, Sydney, NS B1P 6X9.
How Can I Borrow Talking Books?
Choose your titles from an annotated catalogue, which is available from your library, and give your requests to the library either in person or over the phone. The library will contact you when your books arrive. Because of demand, some titles may not be available immediately.
How Long May I Keep The Books?
In general, Talking Books are loaned for a period of one month. They may be returned earlier than the specified date or renewed once if there are no other requests for the title. Please ask for renewals before the due date.
